چکیده

Several analytic models describe the steady-state throughput of bulk transfer TCP flows as a function of round trip time and packet loss rate. These models describe flows based on the assumption that they are long enough to sustain many packet losses. However, most TCP transfers across today’s Internet are short enough to see few, if any, losses and consequently their performance is dominated by startup effects such as connection establishment and slow start. This paper extends the steadystate model proposed in [34] in order to capture these startup effects. The extended model characterizes the expected value and distribution of TCP connection establishment and data transfer latency as a function of transfer size, round trip time, and packet loss rate. Using simulations, controlled measurements of TCP transfers, and live Web measurements we show that, unlike earlier steady-state models for TCP performance, our extended model describes connection establishment and data transfer latency under a range of packet loss conditions, including no loss.

Modeling split-TCP latency and buffering requirements in GEO satellite networks - Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, 2005 IEEE

The paper addresses the TCP performance enhancing proxy techniques broadly deployed in wireless networks. Drawing on available models for TCP latency, we describe an analytical model for the latency and the buffer requirements related to the split-TCP mechanism. Although the model applicability is broad, we present and evaluate the model in the context of geostationary satellite networks, where...

An Extended Model for TCP Loss Recovery Latency with Random Packet Losses

It has been a very important issue to evaluate the performance of transmission control protocol (TCP), and the importance is still growing up because TCP will be deployed more widely in future wireless as well as wireline networks. It is also the reason why there have been a lot of efforts to analyze TCP performance more accurately. Most of these works are focusing on overall TCP end-to-end thr...

An integrated model for the latency and steady-state throughput of TCP connections

Most TCP connections in today's Internet transfer data on the order of only a few KBytes. Such TCP transfers are very short and spend most of their time in the slow start phase. Thus the underlying assumptions made by steady-state models cease to hold making them unsuitable for modeling nite ows. In this paper, we we propose an accurate model for estimating the transfer times of TCP ows of arbi...

Modeling and Performance Evaluation of LTE Networks with Different TCP Variants

Long Term Evolution (LTE) is a 4G wireless broadband technology developed by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) release 8, and it's represent the competitiveness of Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) for the next 10 years and beyond. The concepts for LTE systems have been introduced in 3GPP release 8, with objective of high-data-rate, low-latency and packet-optimized...

Latency Analysis of TCP on an ATM Network

In this paper we characterize the latency of the BSD 4.4 alpha implementation of TCP on an ATM network. Latency reduction is a difficult task, and careful analysis is the first step towards reduction. We investigate the impact of both the network controller and the protocol implementation on latency. We find that a low latency network controller has a significant impact on the overall latency o...
